Subarna Mustafa

Renowned TV and film actress Subarna Mustafa talked to the Cultural Correspondent about a variety of issues–personal and professional. Excerpts from the interview

What do you fear most?
Sometimes, a feeling of dread grasps me, regarding my loved ones and the uncertainties they might go through in future. Other than that, I fear nothing- except maybe cockroaches!

What is the one thing that you expect your loved ones to give you?
That’s very simple- love itself of course!

How old were you when you first fell in love?
I was just 13 years old, when I fell madly in love with Roger Moore, after watching the movie Saint.

What do you do during your leisure time?
When I am not shooting or working, I usually stay home. I watch movies, listen to a lot of music, especially instrumentals. I also listen to songs of Rabindranath. Lata Mangeshkar and AR Rahman are my favourites too. However, I believe that what I do during my leisure time is a big contribution towards enrichment of my knowledge.

If you suddenly discover that you have lost all your recognition and popularity, what would you do?
I would be devastated of course. I work for the people and the appreciation and recognition that I get from them are what I am grateful for. Many artistes might claim that they do not view or consider recognition, as an important element of their career, which I think, is completely misleading.

Movies which you would never stop enjoying?
Pather Panchali, Gone with the Wind, ET and a few more.

Books which you would never tire of reading..
Definitely Galpo Guchho by Rabindranath Tagore. I have a copy of the book on my desk all the time.

Are you satisfied with your life and career?
Of course I am satisfied. You see, we live in a country where many people live under the poverty line. By the grace of God, I have a chance to work for my living and I know that there are many people out there who love me. That’s all that I need right now.

Tazin Ahmed

Versatility could very well be Tazin Ahmed’s middle name. She is a multi-tasking celebrity who has made her mark in many fields – ranging from performances in the theatre and small screen, as a journalist, playwright, TV anchor and director.

Tazin grew up in a cultural environment with a strong belief that hard work and dedication would enable her to create a niche for herself, which she successfully did with her down to earth attitude and exceptional acting chops.

Tazin completed her HSC in 1992 and in 1994 joined the daily Bhorer Kagoj. In 1997 she took up a job with Prothom Alo and became a staff reporter in 1998. She was also a columnist for Anondo Bhubon and a freelance contributor to Bangla Bazar. In 2002, she joined Mercantile Bank as a public relations officer. One year later she took up the mantle of programme executive with ntv. She staged her entry on the small screen in 1996. Alongside she became associated with theatre troupe Natyojon. In 2000 she joined Aronyak and is still a member of the troupe.

Eventually the load got to her and in 2004 she decided to focus on acting and writing. To date Tazin has scripted around 12 plays and directed a few as well. Commenting on her role as director she says, “Directing a few plays does not make one a professional and I’m not comfortable when termed as one.”

Talking about her current work, Tazin says, “I’m starring in a daily soap called ‘The Family’ which will be on air soon. The story is about an extended family. Another 26-episode serial titled “O Bondhu Amar,” directed by Hiru Khan and written by Imdadul Haque Milon, will be aired soon.”

On her future plans, she says, “It’s very hard to plan when you are a media professional. You are bound to be frustrated if things don’t go according to plan. I feel that the TV channels and the media should change their perspective. Instead of going in for the narrow circle of sponsors, the channels should concentrate on quality. Only then will we have good writers, actors, directors and anchors.”

Whether it is writing, acting or anchoring, the vivacious Tazin knows to give it her best shot each time. No wonder she has a firm position in the hearts of her fans.

Srabonti

Afzal Hossain and Srabonti star in Ekakitto aired on ntv.

The play follows a middle-aged affluent executive, working for a multinational company, who suddenly feels that he is lonely. This newfound realisation makes his life a living hell.

He seeks refuge from the situation and finally meets the woman who can offer him the much-craved company. The catch is he had been married to her for ten years, and they have been divorced for the last seven years.

The play is written by Dilip Chakraborty and directed by Monirul Islam Masud.

Banna Mirza Interview eXclusive

Eid brings in a festive air. After a month of fasting, everyone tries to make this occasion a little more special. How do celebrities celebrate the occasion? What do they think of this day? A familiar face on the small screen, Bonya Mirza, shares her thoughts.“When I was a child, Eid meant freedom to me. I grew up in a conservative family and there were lots of dos and don’ts for the children. I was never allowed to go anywhere or play around. But on Eid, there was no restriction. It was three days of unlimited fun,” says Banna.

Growing up in a small town in Kushtia, Banna had the opportunity to enjoy the community-based culture. “I think, every festival attains its proper mood when it becomes universal. In this regard, I truly enjoy the Bengali New Year. On Eid, the whole community becomes one big family. That is one of the things I cherished. My childhood memories of Eid consist of fond experiences shared with others. Waking up early in the morning, putting on brand new cloths, I would go visit almost every house in our paara and play with the children. When the day ended, I felt like crying, thinking why must all good things end abruptly? Now living in an apartment complex, I miss those days. People in the metro areas hardly bother about their neighbours. It’s frustrating,” she says.

“We waited eagerly for Eid because it was only time of the years when we made new clothes. Now as my profession demands new clothes often, I don’t specifically wait for Eid to shop.”

A trait inherited from her family, Banna Mirza thinks a lot about the prevailing social injustice and inequality. “Eid is a time for celebration but shouldn’t everyone be entitled to it? People are struggling to cope with the ongoing price hike; the recent disastrous flood has left so many homeless. Is a grand celebration really the right thing to do? I think a better way to celebrate Eid would be donating some of the money, intended for buying expensive new clothes and other items, to the people who desperately need our help. Then it would be a universal celebration.”

The sensitive actress also expresses her concern about the fishermen who did not come back after the recent storms in the Bay of Bengal. “What will these families do this Eid? But I know life goes on. Even a rickshaw-puller will celebrate Eid in his own way. My mother will definitely cook some special dishes and I will spend the day with my family.”

Tisha - A talented Artist

Tisha is the name of one of the most popular and talented artists of small screen of the contempo¬rary time. This talented artist has spent some of her childhood times in Rajshahi, then she came to Dhaka and took admission in Viqarunnisa Noon School in class-IV. After completing her school and college from there she is now studying in ‘North South University’.

Tisha’s father inspired her to enter into the cultural world. Tisha was the “Notun Kuri 1995″ Champion as she became first all in a row in dancing, singing, acting and in story telling. Tisha was also one of the founder members of a band group named “Angel”. But after the grand success of the advertisement of CocaCola, City Cell and Keya beauty soap her life turned to a new direction and now Tisha has accepted modeling and acting as profession. Though she has decided to work in the modeling and acting sector, she would never withdraw herself from singing as it is an integral part of Tisha. She still sings in several of her family gatherings.

Tisha maintains a very busy schedule including classes and shootings. Her mother is very cooperative about her works. Tisha shares everything with her mother. Tisha said that Tisha’s mother takes care of everything including her makeup, dress up and hairstyle. Tisha thinks that all these were not possible if her mother was not with her. Tisha feels very much confident if her mother stays with her and can concentrate solely on acting and that gives her good work. Tisha hardly gets time to spend with her classmates but still Tisha maintains a very friendly relation with all her classmates. She gets maximum number of phone calls and SMS from her class mates when any of her drama is shown in the TV. Tisha prefers to spend her leisure time by sleeping at home, listening to music and by decorating her house. Sometimes she goes for shopping with her mother to buy perfume, bag or music CD. In future Tisha aims to go a long way and wants to continue studies with acting. We wish her all the best to reach the targets.

Piritir Dokandari

After finishing it’s shooting in Sonargaon, Pubail and Savar the movie Piriter Dokandari is now shooting on a location in sector four of Uttara.

At first we observed a doctor and some nurses roaming around but later we found out that they all were acting in this very film. Later, we met the director of the film P A Kajol.

This is his 25th film and after the success of Hridi Talkies’ Ek Takar Bou and Praner Shami, this is his third production. The director believes that the viewers will like this film because it is a bit different as it talks about family and social problems.

The director also said that Nayok Raj Razzak’s acting in this movie was very soul touching and Shabana played a role where she talked in Noakhalis’ dialect. After almost more than 12 years, the two undisputed queen of Bengali music, Sabina Yasmeen and Runa Laila, sang together in the music of Shawkat Ali Emon.

Mr. N M Alamgir, the main assistant director, said that 70 percent shooting is almost completed. Bindu, Emon, Miju Ahmed, Kabila and child artist Dighi has also acted in this film.

Api Karim

Api Karim’s second movie

In her ten years long career, Api Karim had only acted in one cinema. Six years ago, back in 2003 she acted in the movie “Bachelor” produced by Mustafa Sarwar Farooki, and her different character got her awards that year.

Even though she was swept away with the round of appreciation due to her performance in that movie, she wasn’t seen in any other film after that. But after 2003, her era of no-film has finally come to an end again. Salauddin Labhlu’s second movie Warish will be her second movie that she will be acting in.

This news was brought to us by Salauddin Lavlu himself. Famous for ‘Molla Barir Bou’, Salauddin Lavlu said, “It was decided long before who will be the ones acting in ‘Warish’- only the actress was remaining. It is no question about why I chose Opi to act in this movie. There is nothing new to say about her acting abilities. I hope Api can bring about her best acting in my cinema. I took her in my film hoping just that.”

The only thing left to see now is how Api is valued by her audience.
